"PEKING PING-PONG"
At last the U.S. and China have come to their senses. No longer are we "not speaking," thanks to ping-pong.
A couple of weeks ago a team of players were taken on a tour of Peking. What did they find in the midst of that hated horror, Godless Communism? A nice place. Clean Streets. Poor but equal and daily prospering people, working together to keep order and full stomachs in the most populated country in the world. An incredibly low illiteracy rate.
This is a great break through in Chinese-American policies, whether Russia likes it or not. (They don’t.) If we can get the three most powerful nations in the world to form a triangle, the world will be a safer place.
I hope China gets a place in the U.N. This would be another step toward that great dream – World Peace.

ECOLOGY NIGHT
On the night of April 15, our school gave the parents the first impact of how we look, breathe, and live in that dirty word: pollution. The students participated in filling the halls with information, projects and literally junk.
If you had examined each or most of the exhibits displayed, you would find it pretty depressing. That’s exactly the point, believe it or not! People should try to use low-lead gasoline, non-polluting detergents and participate in bottle, can and aluminum drives.
Mr. Fogel, who came to talk to us last year about a motorcycle trip down the Pan-American Highway, spoke to us this time about our polluted waterways. He told us of his trip down the inter-coastal waterway from New York Harbor or Miami, Florida. He showed slides and a film about his trip and told of the pollution he encountered.
We would like to thank Mr. Fogel for coming and giving us some sober facts about pollution.

THE "DIRTY GERTY" AWARD
In connection with the Ecology Fair, the 7X Social Studies Class did a survey to decide where the dirtiest place in town was. In a landslide vote, the "Dirty Gerty" award was won by the Dale Brook Finishing Co. commonly called "The Bleachery." A poll was taken on other questions regarding ecology and the results are as follows:
Yes No 1. Should our government ban the future production of gasoline engines for automobiles? 40 44 2. Do you participate in paper drives and bottle and can drives? 73 16 3. Do you use a non-lead gasoline in your car? 42 50 4. Does your household use a non-phosphate detergent? 61 35 5. Do you think the Ecology program tonight will have any constructive effect on the people of our community? 75 12 6. Do you let your water run unnecessarily by not repairing a leak? 23 64 7. Have you out down or at least tried to out down on driving your car since cars are the major polluter? 60 61 8. Do you think our government should commit itself to an all out effort on saving our environment? 85 7
RECYCLING DRIVE
On Saturday May 1, a small group of Students Against Pollution, a few Students for Environmental Action and a handful of Girl Scouts came to the town garage at the west end of Hollywood Ave. for a recycling drive. Four or five cars driven by SEA members or parents drove around town collecting bottles that concerned citizens had put by the curbs. We got about four and a half tons of glass or two truckloads. Two people worked at smashing the glass and the rest removed the steal rings from twist top bottles and the lids from others.
There are nearly 50 members of SAP. Why then were there only FOUR of us there? I believe that more than half of the students who joined SAP did so only to get out of school two afternoons. That fact didn’t bother me until Saturday. During the litter cleanups earlier this spring, we needed man power. There was lots of ground to cover and nearly every member attended the clean-up. Now, when we really needed a lot of kids again, only four showed up.
Some questions still go unanswered. Why do we only get 18 or 20 people to show up at meetings? Of course, there is baseball and dentist appointments, but I’m sure that this isn’t the case with 30 people. You can’t be concerned about pollution only form 8:00 to 3:00.... or can you?

BOMB HITS THE WARRIOR
No, it’s not a witch, it’s not Angel Davis, it’s a rotten article in our last issue criticizing "NOW! HOW?" in which the writer does nothing but peek at the poor guys who spent many weeks preparing and producing that great play.
The conclusions the writer drew are nothing short of radical. And don’t knock the costumes ‘till you tried sewing them yourselves like the staff of "NOW! HOW?" did.
The author let us take a breath of fresh air in that polluted article by complimenting some of the players. All of them were great I might add.
Did anyone enjoy this article? It offended me. It sang praise to "upstarts" and "wild eyed radicals" and put down stability, and in a more subtle way, peace and quiet within the sphere of a small town. It sounded like the article was ghost written by Abbie Hoffman.

HO-HO-KUS PLAY GROUP DOES IT AGAIN
"NOW! HOW?" was the funniest thing I’ve seen all year!.................Phonzo Jones
**** - four stars!!! Highest rating ………..Danny McGovern
Hilarious!!! ..........Fudd
The best and funniest ……….. The HHK Warrior
"NOW! HOW?" was great. It had humor, enthusiastic and talented actors and great writers. Two years ago the PTA sponsored a play called "Red, Bleached and Blue." It was a riot but this production even topped it. It was refreshing to see some good clean humor and "NOW! HOW?" had plenty. ……. Bob Lizza
ROCK RADIO
Ro you rock ‘n roll listeners, here is some advice. If you don’t have a radio with FM, then your best choice is either WNBC 66 or WABC 77 and if you have a powerful radio, try to get CKLW 80 or WCFL 100. AM radio has too many commercials, but the disc jockeys usually crack jokes and set up, and make fun of all of the commercials but talk during the records, when they’re being played.
N.Y. Mets fans and country music listeners, WJRZ 97 will no longer exist, and a new rock station will be coming without the Met games WWDJ. WNBC FM (97.1) will carry the Mets. FM listening is much better to record from and there are hardly any commercials.
WPIJ (95.5) (formerly WABC FM) has good rock concerts and albums. Alex Bennet is on from 6 to 10 in the morning.
WOR FM (98.7) is my favorite. It’s a mixture of pep, oldies and outs from albums.
WCBS (101.1) plays the album versions of 45’s and several times a day, they will have 101 minutes of non-stop rock ‘n roll.
WPIX used to be rotten music, but now they’ve gone to rock. Like WABC, but no commercials.
WNEW (102.7) great album station, my second favorite.

MUSIC
Here are some recent albums and my evaluation of them:
"Paranoid" (Black Sabbath) Best I’ve heard in ’71. Lots of hard rock with a great sound. I’d put this in the same class as "Tommy" and "Jesus Christ, Superstar" A plus 11 rating.
"Seatrain" (Seatrain) Anther good album, hard and soft rock with a country and western accent. An exceptionally good cut by a fairly unknown group. B plus rating.
"Nantucket Sleighride" (Mountain) truly a Mountain album, the only thing that makes this one stand out among other Mountain albums, it’s the best ever done by that group. A rating.
"Woodstock II" Boring compared to the first Woodstock Album. It isn’t worth the ten bucks you need to buy it … Rated S (Save your cash)

CAN YOU SEE IT?
Just the other day, we were sitting around and a brilliant thought ripped through our highly intelligent brains. The idea was to present to our fans something really sweet and tasty. After hours of deliberation and numerous trial and error periods, we created the one!!! the only!! The Lizza-Walsh Super Super-star Sundae Split!!!
- Take a banana in hand, peel it and slit it down the middle with a sharp knife.
- Place the two halves in a long dish.
- Break out the ice cream.
- On the right side place a generous scope of vanilla, on the left a high school of chocolate and in the center a heap of strawberry.
- Add syrup to this (we suggest strawberry on the strawberry, chocolate, on the chocolate and caramel on the vanilla.)
- In between the vanilla and strawberry scoops add a heap of mint chocolate chip pyramid style – between the strawberry and chocolate a hunk of pineapple ice cream.
- Top the two latest scoops with pineapple syrup on the pineapple and chocolate syrup on the MCC.
- Coat the entire mixture with whipped cream.
- Slice another banana into little circles and place around the outside.
- Chipped nuts and a cherry will finish off this gourmet item very divinely.
P.S. we would suggest making this in the freezer so the ice cream doesn’t melt before you get it furbished.

SPORTS
The Ho-Ho-Kus Baseball team is off and running. The start of the ’71 season was delayed by a rainout of scheduled Montvale game on April 26. In their next scheduled game our brilliant athletes played superb baseball in a contest vs. St. Lukes on April 30th. The Warriors, lead by pitcher Fudd Kelley won 11-7. Fudd had 8 strike – outs. Billy Marinelli hit a home run on an error and John Mason had a triple.
Against Old Tappan HHK played even better baseball. Fudd again the pitcher had another great day. Our Warriors cleaned Old Tap 18-2.
Thursday’s game vs. Montvale, a raincheck, was again rained upon. I guess someone up there just doesn’t want to see Montvale get slaughtered.
Today a game is scheduled against Wyekoff. I predict an easy victory for the Warriors.
PLAYOFFS
NBA- The defending world champion New York Knicks won their first set against the Atlanta Hawks, 4 games to 2. But lost the second to Baltimore in a heart stopping game at the Garden. The final score 91-93. Los Angeles beat Chicago and went on and lost to Milwaukee, in the semi-finals. The series was won by Milwaukee in four straight. Aleindor and his Bucks are now world champs.
STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS – A big upset took place at Boston Garden in a game when the Boston Bruins were supposed to have an easy victory over the Canadians. Montreal just completely outskated the Bruins. Galie Ken Dryden had some beautiful saves. In another upset St. Louis Blues lost to Minnesota. Chicago got off to a lucky start taking the Flyers in four. The Rangers doing it in the first one against Toronto taking the series. The Rangers then went up against Chicago for the semi-finals. They lost in 7 games, three in overtime but lost the last 4-2. Now the Black Hawks go in to the finals against the Canadians.
